Oral Health and PregnancyWhen you are planning on falling pregnant or when you are pregnant it is recommended to visit your dentist for a routine dental check up to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy.
It has been proven that during pregnancy you can be more prone to bacterial irritation, sensitivity and inflammation. Increased hormone levels can increase the way in which the gums will react to the bacterial irritants that are found in plaque causing this to happen.
The inflammation that can occur is referred to as gingivitis and the common symptoms are bleeding, redness and swelling of the gum area. Gingivitis is more commonly noticed when people brush or floss. If the infection is found deeper in the gum tissue around the actual tooth, then it is referred to as periodontitis. If periodontitis is left untreated over a period of time your teeth and gums could be left with damage that is permanent, which could cause you to suffer tooth loss.
To help ensure you maintain healthy teeth during and after your pregnancy it is recommend to have regular dental check-ups, regular brushing and flossing, healthy diet, drinking water, limiting intake of sugary foods and snacking on healthy foods.
